what would be symptoms of a bad steering rack or inner tie rods? 700 1988

Mike
I've got a similar instability in the steering of my 1994 940 and have done all the stuff you have plus reconditioning the rack. I suspect the INNER tie-rod ends are worn and intend replacing them shortly.

Also, my upper steering column bearing (straight down under the steering wheel) is worn and rattles badly. Application of grease last week fixed the problem for the meantime, but another job coming up is to remove the column and replace the bearings.

If I still have problems then I'm going to replace the 2 steering universal joints between the column and the rack.

I've got intentions of getting some new front tires, but don't want to do this until I've sorted out the steering, else I'll end up paying for 2 wheel alignments.

Let us know how you get on.
