front/back pulsating auto-gearshift on braking - problem? 700 1992

Hi All
On my 92 740T automatic trans. wagon I have been noticing a front/back movement of the gearshift lever on hard braking. It pulsates back and forth (front to back) about a half inch when I start brake at say 50 MPH and slows its cycle down as the car slows - almost as if the brake rotors were out but there is absolutely no pulsating of the brake pedal. If I put it in neutral before braking it does not do it. Now I am thinking if the gearshifter is moving the trans and engine must be moving which must be hard on the engine mounts. Anybody have a clue on what might be causing this? I couldn't find anything remotely like this in the faq or archives. Maybe it's not a problem - I just never remember any of my other RWD Volvos doing this.
Thanks,
Robb McC
