Engine revs itself during idle

I'm assuming this is because one of the control units is compensating for something amiss. Could it be a vacuum leak (haven't stuck my head in the engine compartment to have a look-see yet), or the air mass meter? The car hasn't had a tune-up in a while - inefficient spark plug perhaps?

The car runs fine otherwise - good power; a little hesitant to start sometimes; idle is at 1100 RPMs when warm, about 900 RPMs when cold; idle is smooth when the car isn't reving itself.

By the way, the self-revving is only a few hundred RPMs.

I don't think the brakes have anything to do with it since it revs itself when I'm coasting or with the parking brake engaged or just sitting on a level surface with no brakes applied.

Maybe it's just getting cranky in its old age.
