Radio stops working, then the gas gauge goes from 1/2 to empty then... 200

the oil light came on and then the car died while I was driving down the road. This happened in the span of 3 minutes. The car is an '88 245. Tried starting it again a few times and it was sputtering so my friend and I left and tried to find some help. When we got back I started it fine but it wouldnt idle so for about 4 minutes i had to rev it and then it idled fine and everything worked again. I am going to get a brand new battery today... could that be the problem? Thanks a lot guys.
