A/C leak on Volvo 960 1997 (132K) 900

Hi All,
Yesterday we had 90F and my a/c stopped functioning again. 3 years ago I had the same story so I went to a local shop where my a/c system was recharched and inspected for leaks. The leak wasn't found and everything worked fine for 2 years. Last summer it happened again and I had to pay another $150 to recharge the system. As usual the leak wasn't found but the a/c worked less than a year. Now I don't really know what to do.
I know it's possible to recharge the system in a home garage, but I don't know the type of Freon that my car uses and a place to buy it. Does anyone know a common place for the system leak in 960’s? Also, what would be a rational decision in my situation? As usual, your responses are greatly appreciated.
