possible cause for backfire 1800 1972

I'm having a problem that I can't seem to fix. My 72 1800E runs great and has plenty of power but when I close the throttle while coasting downhill (which is often here in hilly seattle) I get light but constant backfiring. I checked the timing and it's right on specks. Adjusting the fuel mix has no affect on the backfiring. So I'm thinking maybe in the ignition? Can it be a worn cam or bad valve? This problem seemed to happen over night.
