1983 turbo 200

hello all,
I am working on my recently acquired '83 k jet turbo with m46 transmission. It needs a quite of bit of work, and while seeing if there were any visual signs of the turbo leaking oil, I ended up taking off the intake manifold, IAC motor, and throttle body while I plan on replacing the oil separater. I noticed there was some gunk in the intake pipe right before the turbo where the flametrap comes in. Why would they plumb the flametrap upstream of the turbo?? Also on top of the oil separater there is a flametrap?? I didn't think that turbos had flametraps. And right after the flametrap there is the long hose to the intake, and where the vacuum line is on NA cars, there is a little cap/cover on it. I would like a little insight on this.

What else should I clean up/check while the intake is off?

When a turbo leaks oil, what are some symptoms? After the car sat for a weekend in the garage and it blew blue smoke everywhere for a while at idle, but after a short drive, I couldn't get it to smoke again? This symptoms lead me to believe that it is valve seals, but I was under the impression that Volvos never had any troubles with leaking valve seals. And when I took out the spark plugs, they were brown, seems liek they were too hot, but there was not any oil on them. So could it be that the turbo leaks oil on the exhaust side?? Although there is oil in the intake pipes, but that is normal for turbo engines I guess. Any ideas as to where it is burning oil?

Thanks in advance,

Smith T

By the way, the car has 212k miles.
