A/C identification and removal/installation 200

A volvo 240 owner in my area has a A/C-system for sale. It is fitted to an older (think '84) 244 and has been installed later. He does not know when the installation has been made and the year of the A/C-system (he did not do it). Is there a way I can tell ?

Any hints or pieces of advice it I choose to buy the system and fit it into may 240 '89. I suppose that it is freon system - can such gas be filled into the system again (isn't it banned?) or must I use an alternative ?? If yes, what is the alternative and must I modify the system ??

Hope somebody can help me.
Peter
