alternator - how to see what's wrong? 200 1986

Hi,

the other day my brick went on strike: even central locks would not work, battery flat. After jumpstarting, it would not keep running. Took it to local @sshole mechanic who said alternator failed, pay me 400 bucks, no, I won't install aftermarket parts. After shooting the guy (after some negotiation, he said he tried two OTHER Volvo alternators, neither worked, but I think it was a lie), tomorrow morning I get my presumably dead alternator back.

If anybody could help me with some ideas on HOW to check what's wrong, I would be really grateful. I am cash-strapped and saving this alternator would save my life. Or my Brick. I know how to check brushes (bolts out, pull black thingie out, if brushes are shorter than 6mm, replace them). Anything else I can check or even repair? The thing might be dirty as I had an oil leak that of course poured down to it - can some degreasing help?

Thanks,

Harry
