Ignition points / ignition problems 140-160 1974

Admittedly nearly all of my distributors are older than yours but 0.040"
seems like a very large point gap. Typically it is 0.016-0.020" or
less, and it is better to set them with a dwell meter to around 60° dwell
(most manuals say 57-63°) Now 0.016-0.020" ~= 0.4-0.5mm so that could be
part of the confusion if you are using a metric feeler gauge.

If you could find a distributor and module from a 75 240 you would be done
with the point problems.

One of the big problems I have faced over quite a few years is worn
distributors = worn point cams and worn advance mechanisms, both of
which are a real pain. I've had distributors where a point gap of more
than 0.010" would reduce the dwell to where the engine ran poorly over
about 2500 rpm, and I wore the first distributor on my 164 to the point where
the advance weights tried to machine through the cast arn case (made a groove
over 0.075" deep!) The cast arn dust also made things problematic for point
adjustment. I was traveling the length of North Carolina at the time, at
night, and adjusted points in some of the darkest places in the state! Same
car now has 284K miles now (100K then)and is on its 3rd distributor. Next
one will be an electronic one out of a 75 model 164. Fortunately this one is
working fine now.

If you don't have a dwell meter I recommend you get one (they are pretty
cheap) and set your points that way. And keep your eyes open for a better
distributor.
