tranny cable hung up 200

This has happened twice now: the auto tranny in my 1990 240 refused to shift into higher gear starting out. I looked under the hood and saw that the cable was looped underneath a bolt on top of the engine. I released it and lubed it and the gear shifts ran smoothly as before.

This happened 2 years ago and I had the cable replaced but it's coming back. As I said, this is the 2nd time in the last year it's happened. I release the hung-up cable and it works fine. What lube should I use? Why is this happening?
