Airbags safe with 5' tall person? 1990

I've had many 240's but none with an airbag. I recently got a '90 245 & a '90 745 turbo. My wife, who is 5' tall, is worried about sitting too close to the airbag, especially these earlier model airbags. Any opinions or know where I can find info on the safety of these? Thanks.
