Rear view mirror vibrates? 200

My wagon's been playing up for a few weeks: a heavy drone and vibration intermittently on long highway drives (above 60mph). First I noticed was blurred vision of road behind me - wasn't me, the mirror was vibrating (mounting is fine). Then the groaning started. Sounds like really loud road/tire noise. It comes and goes, sometimes under load, sometimes even when coasting, or even slowing down.

I'm sure it's not the braking system, nor the exhaust (both overhauled). Checked rear axle/diff for oil and is fine. Visually inspected drivetrain, rear suspension and all appears ok.

Any ideas where to start?
