transmission fluid level...hot vs. cold? 900 1995

I've started to drain 2+ quart of transmission fluid and replacing with synthetic fluid at each engine oil change.
I think I'm adding the exact amount back in but upon checking the trans. fluid level I'm a little confused.
When is the transmission fluid official hot? How long does it take? I'm assuming it is a fuction of how often the gears change....(?)
I'm getting readings all over the place but don't really know when its hot or cold (my dip stick has a cold range and a hot range)
Is too much fluid really bad or only a little bad. The car drives fine with no slipage but I'm thinking I added too much fluid. When I replaced the exact amount that I took out I don't get any reading on the dip stick under cold (running) conditions so I added a little more. (another 1/4 quart) Now I think it is too much. It's in the "hot" range but I only drove three miles.
Does anybody really know or does everyone else guess, also?
