Do I Have To Replace The Pinion Seal? 200 1988

I have an '88 240 wagon with 239k and I began to get a driveline vibration.
I marked the position of the drive shaft and removed it.
The ujoint near the carrier bearing is bad and replacing it is sure to correct the problem.
However...
When removing the driveshaft I noticed that 3 out of the 4 bolts that connect it to the pinion shaft on the diff case were loose!!
Also there was a significant amount of oil that had sprayed around that general area. The level of gear oil in the diff case is very low.
Does anyone think it's possible that the leak was because of the loose bolts and all the vibration from the bad ujoint?
I'm really don't want to replace that seal, it looks like a real tough job.

Thanks

Richard
