A quick check on the condition of your battery and charging system requires a voltmeter, and a helper.

Check voltage at battery with engine off, and no accessories on.
should be about 12.6V (2.1V/cell * 6 cells in battery)
could be a little higher or lower depending on ambient temp
must be over 12V or something is wrong with battery.

Check voltage at battery with engine off, and headlights on.
voltage may drop a little, maybe to 12V, but not much more.
if voltage drops a multiple of 2.1, you have a bad cell in the battery.

Check voltage at battery while someone cranks the engine.
voltage will drop while engine cranks, but should not drop below 11V
if voltage drops a multiple of 2.1, you have a bad cell in the battery

Check voltage at battery while engine runs.
should see between 12.5V & 14.5V
15V or higher for more than a minute or three indicates overcharge
overcharging will damage the battery
regulator or alternator could be bad

These checks take about 30 seconds.
