Sucess rebuilding a steering rack or buy one rebuilt? 200

My 82 242 has a lot of play in the steering. No boots on either side of the steering rack for I don't know how long and internal bleeding dripping from the end where the driver's side boot should be. It's possible to grab hold of the steering column from beneath the car and shake it quite a bit without and response at the wheels. The looseness is all inside of the rack. Has anyone had success/problems rebuilding a rack? Could mine be beyond gaskets? Thanks in advance for your advice.
