I would put my money on valves... your car has quite a few miles, and in that time, have you ever adjusted the valves?

Before I installed my VX cam I checked all my clearances, every valve on the head was out (.008 to .010).

After adjusting the valves, and installing new hushers on the exhaust side, my 1990 w/ 195k is as quite as the day she left the showroom.
