About to do brakes on 1983 240--how much work or money? 200

I am NOT an experienced mechanic. I have a 1983 240 with about 80,000 us miles. When we bought the car about 15 months ago, the mechanic who inspected the car said the front brakes were getting pretty close to needing work; I have forgotten what percentage he estimated.

The brakes are now squeeking more than they were. But they aren't pulling or grabbing. Is the increased squeek an indication that the work is about due?

If so, is this something a neophyte with no good garage equipment can do (no lift, not even jack stands)? How much work would it be? And how much should I expect to pay if I take it to a dealer or a garage to do the work?
