O/D Solenoid / 1990 740 700

Several months ago, while driving through a water puddle, I shorted out my overdrive solenoid. I replaced it and everything has been fine for about 50,000 miles.

Today while driving down the highway the O/D indicator on my dashboard cluster came on and the car down-shifted. I turned it around for home hoping the solenoid became disconnected. It had not. The solenoid looked like it had been exposed to extreme heat. The rubber booty had melted and I'm assuming everything within this $250 part has too.

What could be making this happen? What should I check next?

Thank you in advance for your help.
