1985 volvo 240 GL overheats when rpms go up and goes back to normal when shifting to lower gear

Hello,

My volvo parts/repair place sold me a chip that should go into the back of my instrument panel, but when I took the instrument panel apart I did not see anyplace to take out an old chip (with resistors, etc on it) and put the new one in.

My volvo starts to overheat when the rpms get high enough to shift gears and when I shift to the lower gear it cools off.. but this is becoming less so.
It really does get hot, so I don't think this is a false signal.

I replaced the thermostat last summer and I will try it again, but any other suggestions would be appreciated.

The woman of volvo...

Thanks!
