89 740 GLE 16V intermittently won't start 700

This wagon has been very reliable for the 6k miles I've owned it. Now, it occasionally won't start back up after running for 5-10 minutes. Starter cranks fine but no fire. It's happened twice now -- both times it eventually started after maybe a dozen or more tries -- within <10 minutes of the first failure, it starts and runs fine. Both times I was within 5 miles of home, drove immediately home, and proceeded to start it up easily many times after parking it in the driveway. Needless to say, my wife is giving the wagon a wide berth. I'm wondering what to check. Is the OBD of any use in this case? Appreciate any help.
