Questions about changing inner tie rod 700 1985

Hi all,

I am changing my inner tie rod this weekend (740 turbo with cam rack). I read the FAQ and it is pretty clear, but I am a bit worried about holding the rack gear with a wrench while unscrewing the inner tie rod. Isn't that bad if I ding up the gear with a wrench. Also, the inner tie rod is round and smooth so there is nothing to grip with a wrench. Will large channel locks grip it enough to unscrew the inner rod from the cam rack ?

Thank,

R Duke
