1980 bertone coupe

my father and i are replacing the engine in a 1980 bertone coupe with an 1989 model engine. we are about half way. we still have not changed the fuel system to match the engine yet. but the problem is that when we try to turn the engine over we still cant get no spark from the distributer. all the electrical is connected. why wont it fire?
