Groove Cutting? / Temp Fix For Bad O/D Solenoid 700

Does this work for a 1990 740 Wagon? I'm curious. I can't afford a $1000 shop visit. I installed a new solenoid a few weeks ago and it now appears to be melted. I'm assuming it's something more serious. does cutting a groove in the design of the solenoid base, allowing constant fluid flow. Any repercussions?
