head gasket worth a try? 700

Just acquired a 1987 740t, 190,000 miles for free. It has a blown head gasket and was overheated to the point of making the car stop. The car will still start. This happened last nov. and the water that got into the oil/engine has been in ther ever since. The question is, is it worth removing the head and changing the head gasket/water pump/resurfacing head if needed. OR, has overheating the car to the point of making it die, and leaving the water in the engine this long probably caused to much damage. Just want a car for the kid to use to get back and forth to work in for the summer.
