Temp gauge eratic 700 1989

The temp gauge has been acting eratic on my '89 760 since I bought it and tonight I finally got around to working on it. The gauge sometimes shows the correct temp - middle of the band when warmed up, but it frequently jumps back and forth from 0 to midband.

Following advice of the board, I removed the cluster. One by One I pulled all the screws that contact the flexible circuit board on the back of the cluster. I cleaned each of the copper contact points before reinserting the screws. It is still acting much the same. Do I need to take the cluster apart to get at the actual contacts on the meter assembly, or is it more likely that the problem originates with the temp sensor on the engine?

Even though this model is supposed to have the improved wiring harness, I hate to mess with the wires under the hood unnecessarily. What type of sensing element is used? I assume it is a thermistor, which should be quite easy to check.

As always, thanks in advance for the help.

Dan
