Calling all A/C Experts - What's the verdict? 900

Dear Calvin,

Good p.m. I hope one of the Chris's will comment: they're bonafide experts.

Sounds to me as if the AC solenoid and/or clutch is gone. The failed item(s) is/are overloading the circuit, frying the MCC relay/circuit board and blowing fuses. In the Volvo Tech Manual on Climate Control, most of the compressors shown have electromagnets, which presumably are the heart of the clutch device.

I do not know if the solenoid and/or electromagnet is/are available separately from a dealer, or whether they could be taken from a car at a salvage yard. My guess is that the latter could be done (you'd have to buy the entire compressor).

It might be cheaper and/or easier to replace the compressor.

The solder might have flowed "the wrong way" because oxides formed by over heating counter-acted the flux, and blocked solder flow.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

spook
