Hi Guys,
I recently ran across a listing for a 700 series wagon and given its history am wondering if I should pursue it. In effect, I find myself in need of advice on problems that may be specific to Volvo 700 wagons that have spent significant time in the cold and road salt of PA. (The owner and car now reside in northern CA.) Here's some background:
The 700 wagon in question has about 125k of mileage on it and has had what the owner's receipts indicate are 90k, 100k, and 110k full services by the dealer sounds expensive). The owner indicates that it was always garaged in the winters and serviced religiously at the local dealer and an excellent Volvo independent when it reached CA. I've seen multiple pics of the car and the body and paint look like they are in good to excellent shape.
The seller's family is the single owner and indicates that he has all of the receipts --- although I have not had a chance to review them. The owner is a very nice guy but has trouble understanding what is on the service records, so that I have not been able to learn much about what has been replaced over the years via phone conversation. Having reviewed the "Buying a Used 700" from the BB archives I will cover the points suggested there and my own 12 years of experience with my 82 242.
However, I am still wondering if there are things I should be especially careful about when considering a 700 wagon that has spent 9 years back east? If I decide to move on this I'll have an independent Volvo shop look at the under-carriage and run complete tests. For those with experience with 700's that have lived in the cold and salt can you comment on potential problems to be careful with? Thanks.
Dave
