will a blown strut leak oil? 200 1989

Fellow Volvo Owners,

My wife's 1989 240 sedan has 117K miles. Last week I noticed oil stains under the car. This morning I took a quick look and it appears that the oil is coming from the passenger side strut. The source looks to be somewhere up inside the coil spring. And it looks like a rubber boot inside the coils has ripped. I was suprised that a strut would leak oil. Is this possible or is it more likely that the oil source is from somewhere else? The struts are original.

I have never replaced a strut mostly because it looks like a big job. Foe those of you who have, was it as bad as it looks?

Please advise. Thank you.
