You're advancing 20 degrees going from 800 to 1500 rpm? That should not be -- you should have to go over 3000 rpm to get that much.

Very likely a broken or missing spring. There should be two, and you may be able to look down through the holes in the distributor breaker plate while turning the engine by hand to get an idea of what's wrong. Definitely investigate this.
