1990 auto trans overdrive relay- need help 200

I am looking at my friends's 1990 240 wagon with auto trans. I am unfamiliar as my 240 has M47. On her car, the overdrive will not engage and the light is on when you start the car and it stays on. When I push the button I can hear the relay clicking. I have checked the wires at the shifter and they seem fine.

1. Can the relay click and still be bad?

2. How can I test it?

3. Will a fuel pump relay work in there, I have an extra.

4. Can you just jump the relay and have the overdrive engaged?

I appreciate your help.
