troubleshooting: brake system fai;ure warning light. 200 1985

I am a new owner of a 1985 240GL wagon 5-sp/elec.OD 162K. Fact is this is the 1st. Volvo I've ever owned so I am sailing in uncharted waters. My immediate concern is the warning light for the brake system. I was attempting to go fishing yesterday morning, and while driving out of town (approx. 35mph/.3rd gear) the system failure light came on.
I pulled over easily enough and stopped, opened the hood and didn't see any problem with the fluid resevoir. There does'nt appear to be any leakage on the brake lines at the wheels.
Should I bleed the lines? And, what is the best way to do this?
I can't claim to be a mechanic, but I'll try to fix what I can.
Any Ideas ??
