volvo tailights/parking lights are weird!

HI -

Since you say that switching sockets cured the problem, I assume that you have a 240 of 1986 or newer model.

The lower outer sockets on those models have a two-filament bulb, a change from previous models. This is to allow a 20 cp bulb for tail light and a 32cp for brake lights. So the sockets have three contacts, not two as before.

The circuit board and "key" for how the sockets fit are side-specific, so they made the left socket black, the right socket white. If they are reversed, the contacts are all wrong, and strange lighting occurs.

BTW - This is the reason that the taillight housing and circuit boards for a 1985 or older 240 won't easily work in a younger model.

Volvo has many things that many seem weird, such as the upper seal on the B23-B230 water pump, the "easy access" heater blower motor, and other places. HOwever, on balance, they are a lot easier than many many other marques or brands.

(SAAB is a marque, Ford is a brand, it's a status thing)

Good Luck,

Bob

PS It is easier to provide info is the request also has the series, model and year.
