Destroying alternator belts 700 1992

Hello,

Tonight my alternator belt blew (knocking off the other two belts but otherwise doing no damage). The belt was fairly new (couple of months old), installed because the old was was showing signs of wear - fraying on the outside edge. Oddly enough, when I replaced it with another (conviniently already in the wagon with 10mm and 13mm sockets - what luck), a strange vibration that had been present dissapeared.

The Question: what boneheaded mistake have I been doing with regards to tensioning belts? Or, what associated parts should I be looking at to replace to increase belt life?

Any info would be great.

Thanks,
-nate
