MANN filter failure? 900

I changed my oil today at 3000 miles instead of the usual 5000 because I thought the oil looked unusually black. Plus I had a case of M1 0W40 I bought last week looking lonely in my garage. As expected the old oil was very black.
Here is the weird part. When I took off the oil filter, not very much oil came out. At least not as much as I usually get coming down from the top of the engine. Not enough even enough oil to fill the filter. The car had been parked 2 hours at this point.
There is something inside the filter rattling around the old filter when I shake it side to side. It feels like something is loose inside. I haven't had a chance to look inside because im letting the filter drain over night. I have never had this happen before. The new MANN filter went on as usual. Took the car for a spin to the Donut store after the oil change and everything is normal. I don't know what to make of it.
