His compressor hasn't been used for 3 years - the a/c was off when this happened. If the clutch is working properly, the compressor can be seized solid, and it won't make any difference. The compressor isn't engaged at all unless/until the clutch is energized. With the a/c off (especially for 3 years cause it's not working), the clutch should freewheel. If it's not freewheeling with the a/c off, the problem's the clutch, not the compressor.
