94 940 Wagon: Brake Light Malfunction 900

Dear Fellow Brickboarders,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. Need a bit of help with brake light malfunction.

The symptoms:

- all three brake lights (two lower, one upper) work, when headlights are off
- upper brake light only works, when headlights are on
- lower brake lights do not work, when headlights are on
- no bulb failure warning light (normal, if both of a pair of lights are out)

I have checked that:
- lower brake light bulbs are a matched pair
- fuses 2 and 4 (both fine)
- bulb-holders properly in place and with good contact
- wires connected
- bulb failure relay is good (swapped relays, with no change in conditions - upper light works, but lower lights do not, when headlights are on)

From the fact that the upper brake light works (with or without headlights on) I conclude the brake light switch is fine.

I conclude the likely cause(s) of this malfunction are:
- faulty ground
- broken wire.

Before I dis-assemble the rear of this wagon, I'd like to know if anyone has had such a failure? I looked through some posts, and didn't see anything like this.

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

Yours faithfully,

spook
