Thanks to everyone who responded to my plea.

To answer some of the comments:
My mechanic is quite familiar with Volvo and SUs, but he has moved to a big shop from his own and now doesn't feel up the task.
I believe that there is at least SOME major type work to be done. The $700 guy demonstrated to me that the shafts do, indeed, show some/considerable wear on the pair.
I, myself, do not feel up to the task of dealing with new shafts. I pick my battles.

I've been away form BB for a couple of years. It is still be best out there OF ANY KIND.
