she won't start right up - what's wrong? 200 1991

My 1991 240SE wagon won't start up right away. She dies and then, if I try again and give it lots of gas and get it in gear right away - either drive or reverse(it's an automatic), then it stays running and idles fine. No dash lights on. Recently had mass air flow meter replaced. (ouch! that's expensive!) Any ideas about what might be ailing her? Thanks for any help you can offer.
