My '90 740 turbo (175,000k) is suddenly suffering significant power loss under loads, primarily while going up hills. It doesn't want to get above 2500 rpms.
This happened for the first time the other day on the highway with my wife at the wheel, and after the check engine light came on, she called AAA for a tow.
The main (under the chassis) fuel pump has become quite noisy over the last 6 months or so. It is about two years old.
From what I have read in the FAQs, this would indicate a bad pre-pump (in the tank), or a disintegrated hose or clogged sock filter.
My mechanic (not a pure Volvo guy) drove the car briefly, and was thinking that it might be the transmission, because it wasn't down-shifting while under load on the hills. I drove the car again, and while it was true that the car didn't downshift when under throttle while going up hill, it did shift just fine on level ground.
Can anyone share insight into this?
How can I diagnose this problem?
The FAQs mention sticking a hose down the filler neck to listen to the pre-pump. What should it sound like?
All experience and insight is greatly appreciated.
I'll gladly replace the in-tank pump if I can determine that it's bad, but I hate to spend the money on the pump if it's not really bad. If the tranny's shot, this could be the end of our beloved Volvo.
Thanks,
mrad
