1982 240: Battery on when ignition off 200

Hi Volvo Lovers (and the rest of you!)... I'm still really new to this mechanic thing. My experience thus far has been on my 1993 850 but now I'm having trouble with the old 1982 240. When I turn off the ignition the dashboard battery remains lit and the battery drains. I have taken the lead off the battery so it won't drain but would prefer a more long-lasting solution. From reading the archives I'm thinking maybe it is the alternator. I do have a tool set (yea! and it even has a case!!!). Are there some things I should test before going ahead and replacing the alternator? Any help or suggestions would be very, very much appreciated! Thank you. ~Marcia
