Oil filler cap seal 200 1989

This should be your maintenance check item, I change oil over the weekend with synthetic oil waiting for the new oil to drip, I poke the rubber seal with my finger it broke into 3-4 small pieces, they were so brittle, imagine if it broke while I'm opening the cap I'll be in deep trouble. Also this may be my imagination the engine seems running a bit quiter and smoother with the syn oil (1st time use this 110,000 miles, and the new filler cap ) anyone agree/disagree? :-)
