84 Volvo DL 120K refuses to start 200 1984

Greetings:
After several weeks "lurking" I decided to join the forum.
I have a 1984 Volvo DL. It is a reliable vehicle until this morning. I was on the highway when the engine stopped without any warning. I was able to pull to the side of the road but was unable to restart the vehicle. Once home I started to troubleshoot the problem.
The ignition is working properly. I removed a spark plug wire and connected it to a spare sparkplug, the body of the plug was grounded to the engine block. I observed several sparks as the engine turned over. I inspected the fuses (driver side door jam) all the fuses are good.
My next step would be:
a. Inspect the fuel filter (however I had no warning about clogging)
b. Inspect voltage at the fuel pump (gas tank)
c. Is it common for an engine to stall due to fuel starvation w/o warning?

Thanks in advance

AC
