'97 960 Totalled After Hydroplaning 900

My wife hydroplaned in a heavy rainstorm last week, spun 3 times and plowed into a guard rail on the interstate. No other cars were involved and fortunately she was not hurt but the '97 960 (immaculate with only 45K miles) was totalled by the insurance company today.

Here's my question. She doesn't like the styling of the new Volvos and found a 2001 BMW 740i she really likes in terms of the styling and ride. I know this is a Volvo forum and I still own my '92 940 and '91 240. So tell me about the pros and cons of Volvos (which I'm familiar with) versus BMWs (which I know very little about).
