Remove emergency brake shoes?

How in the world do I remove the emergency brake shoes on a 1988 760 wagon? I have pulled them, pushed them, and even managed to (I think) slide them off of the clips that hold them, however the mechanism that operates the shoes is still attached. My haynes manual is UTTERLY unhelpful here, suggesting only that I "disengage" the shoes from the assembly. Well duh. It doesn't say HOW though. ARG. Is there any secret I'm missing? This is all part of an attempt to replace the long parking brake cable.
