CR-814 radio says MTL in display 900 1992

My 92 940T has the CR-814 Radio. Whenever I'm playing a tape the display says MTL and the sound seems a bit muffled. I realize that this is not the best radio but I'm thinking that the MTL stands for metal tapes which I am not using. The manual makes no mention of metal settings. Anyone know how to get rid of this short of getting rid of the radio.
