A/C Decision

Sorry to ask a tired question.

Here goes...

I have an '89 740 GL (non turbo) with 260,000 miles. It still runs great. There are some annoying problems with it that are only the result of neglect (I work too much).

I also have an '86 240 DL wagon (non turbo) with 150,000 miles. It also runs great. It has a new fan installed.

Here's the problem. Neither has working A/C. Both have the A/C compressor in place with belts attached and all. Neither appears to have been converted to r134. I'm not certain, but I think the clutch engages on both compressors when the switch is thrown.

Who in their right mind would want to fix either these? If it were a sane decision, which car would be the best one to fix?

I have heard that the 240 never gets cool enough. However, I favor the 240 due to the miles on the 740.

When/if I make the decision to fix, what will it take? I want to do it right, not just use some seal conditioners and oil. I might be willing to spend up to $500 on this. The 740 especially has saved me so much money that I feel no anxieties over spending a bit on it.
