My OD slips/ Swap advice 1800

I just bought a 65 1800 with a slipping OD. The oil level is good, but I don't know of the condition it's pistons. Some advice for the OD novice would be appreciated. For about $50 I could by a used OD from a 244 or a 140 but will the spines match up? If I did this should I also buy the gearbox? Thanks , Dave
