1995 960 (yeah me again :) ) Creaking while turning 900 1995

On my father's infamous 1995 960 (which looks much better now thanks to the new side lamps aquired with the assistance of this great forum) the car creaks when you turn the steering wheel to either extreme (left or right). My dad's fav mechanic said the shocks were at fault and those were switched to new ones (which he needed, he was running the originals @ 122k) but the creaking remains. I suggested that it might be the springs, and the mechanic said it needed new transmission bushings. Now I don't know what a transmission bushing is but my dad has a brand new tranny in there anyway...and I can't imagine why this would effect the steering. Any advice as to what could be causing the creaking?
